Update about Amryn
Hello everyone, it's Nick providing an update about Amryn since Lisa finds it too difficult to write.
As you know we became pregnant knowing that we had a 1 in 4 chance (statistically speaking) of having another child with the genetic disease called Mitochondrial DNA Depletion Syndrome. To be a carrier of this disease is very rare and for two carriers to marry and have children is even more rare (approx 1 in a million). The disease affects the replication of mitochondria in the cell meaning that as the child grows and her cells multiply her mitochondria become less and less functional. The mitochrondia are present in every cell of the body and provide the energy required for the cell to perform its function. The form of the disease that we have progresses extremely rapidly, something that the doctors have never seen before.
Nevertheless we have had two healthy children as gifts from our Gracious Father. They give us great joy and our prayer was that Amryn would also be healthy. However the Lord in His wisdom has decided that Amryn's journey on this earth will be short and that her life will follow the same path as her sister Rachel.
Below is an update about what happened on Friday and on Saturday.
Friday, November 23
We finally got to see our pediatrician at noon on Friday. After observing Amryn, he confirmed our suspicions and recommended that we take her to Children’s Hospital. She has continued to lose weight and is now 6 lbs 7 oz. Another significant symptom was that she has very little muscle control – her arms, head, and legs just flop without any resistance indicating that her central nervous system is already affected.
We will probably get a feeding tube inserted and prepare to take her home for her final days. We’re not sure how long she will still be with us but in comparison to Rachel she seems to be developing the symptoms quite rapidly and due to her low birth weight she might not live much longer than a few more weeks.
We thank God that she was born externally perfect and that we’ve been able to have wonderful days holding and snuggling with her. Her baptism was a good joyous day. We also praise God that even now her eyes continue to have moments of alertness where she even sometimes seems to smile -- at us or the angels we don’t know :)
Please pray that we will accept God’s plan and help us to believe that He does indeed work all things to our good. He gives life and he takes it away, blessed be the name of the Lord! Pray that especially Lisa will be comforted and feel the love of God during Amryn’s final days as she slowly fades away.
Saturday, November 24
We're still at Children's Hospital in Vancouver and we are hopeful that by Monday we will be discharged to take Amryn home. Her lactic acid levels were very high providing final confirmation that she is indeed suffering from the same Mitochondrial disease that Rachel had. Fortunately this helps spare Amryn from all the testing required to try to find a diagnosis.
They've inserted an NG tube which allows us to feed her Lisa's breast milk directly into her stomach via a tube going through her nose. This way she won't starve and Lisa can know that her basic nutritional needs are being met. She also had an IV put in when we arrived but this will probably be removed today. We want to ensure Amryn is made as comfortable as possible with a minimum of medical support/intrusion.
The staff here have been very helpful although it's hard to witness all the needles and bloodwork that is required to monitor her situation. Her tiny body makes it very difficult to extract blood from her veins. But this is necessary to determine what support measures are required. We will be thankful when this testing comes to an end.
Continue to remember us in your prayers. Lisa finds it especially difficult to feel God's love when it seems as if all the countless prayers for health have been in vain. We had really hoped that Amryn would be healthy. My prayer is that others too will not feel the same way but instead humble ourselves before God's sovereign Hand and realize that this world of suffering is not the way God created it. In His Wisdom He allows this broken world to continue until the number of the elect is full and I'm sure he won't let it last for a second longer. If we, sinful beings, are filled with such pain due to Amryn's sickness then how much more is the Perfect Creator longing to heal and restore His Creation. Our enemy is not God but our enemy is sin and Satan which destroy what God created good.
Come Lord Jesus, Maranatha!!
Nick

Thanks Nick for posting an update. Martin and I - and many others in Aldergrove church, have been anxiously waiting word of Amryn's condition - and that of the both of you.
We share your sadness and grief - and just know that we continue to pray for you and Amryn - our hearts go out to you. Hope to see you soon -
Nicole
Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this difficult time. No words can express how much we feel for you right now - Ryan and I are both in tears as we read this update. Take care.
Nick and Lisa, we will continue to pray for you both and Robyn and Lydia as you go through these final days with Amryn. We are thankful to know that she will be with her Lord and Saviour and will know no pain and suffering. We also pray that God will give you the strenght that you need at this time but also the comfort of His Grace. Thank you for updating us.

Dear Nick and Lisa
Words fail us at times like this, best to quote God's primarily, and even those may initially sound as cliches. Yet God's word is our only comfort,"Come to me all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.."
We pray that you will rest in the knowledge that Jesus went before us, that He endured for His Father's purpose, thereby enabling us to do likewise.
"God did not spare His own Son but gave Him up for us all-how will He not also, along with Him, graciously give us all things?" Nick, you did well to draw our attention to the Sovereignty of God. By living/writing a positive witness to Gods goodness, in spite of sorrow, you are part of God's "work for good" to all of us, reinforcing our trust also. The answer to this "good" is in the next verse of Rom 8,"to be conformed to the likeness of His Son". That is the journey we struggle on together, may we always be supporting each other along the way till the Perfect arrive. God Bless you, Lisa and your girls. Ben & Nancy M.
For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jer 29:11.
our prayers will be heard together and many hugs are sent your way. I never would have thought i could love someone so much that I have never seen. So much more is God's love for us. It truly is amazing to know that He is always doing the right thing.
hugs and kisses and prayers. Christina

"As I sit HERE with tears" not HEAR as I wrote above! :)

We pray that the Lord make our dear Amryn as comfortable as possible and be it his will make her struggle short here on earth. We know that she will be in the Lords hands and in a good place. Although it may be VERY hard for those of us left here. We wish you the Lords blessing and strength

"Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows." 2 Corinthians 1:3-5
Sometimes it feels like there cannot possibly be any more tears in us, but as I sit here and read your blog they begin to flow again. We cannot truly fathom what you are going through, but we can slightly imagine.
We wish you God's mercy and grace as you journey through the nexts days and weeks. May the Lord holds you in the palm of His Hands and may you find encouragement in His Word.
We will be praying for you and your family - for little Amryn that she may have a comfortable and peaceful time on this earth, for yourself and your girls that you may be able to see God's hand in this also.

And we pray that sweet little Amryn will not suffer much but that our Lord will cradle her with peace and make her comfortable and that HE will cradle you all with such comfort that only HE can give!

I am so sad to read about Amryn's condition!! I, like so many others, prayed and prayed the LORD would spare her and your family of this, but who am I to know the plans of the LORD? I remember at Rachel's funeral - the text you chose in Isaiah 40:11 that spoke so clearly about how the LORD tends to those who have young. "He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young." I know for me sitting in the pew, watching you and Nick go through it all was a completely different experience than you all going through it yourselves, but it is comforting to read that the LORD "gently" leads... He knows it will be hard, but He carries his flock close to his heart.
Lisa, I pray for peace and strength that the LORD will grant you and Nick and Robyn and Lydia during these next few days and weeks. It is so true what Nick ended with "Come Lord Jesus! What a day we have to look forward to! Keep you eyes and hearts set on the things above!
Much prayers.

Dear Nick and Lisa,

Nick, Lisa and girls,
I too read your post with tears streaming dowm my face. My heart aches for you, though I cannot even fathom what you are going through.
One of my favourite Christian artists is Carolyn Arends and this is a quote from one of her songs, "Some say it's cruel for God to make a life and take it, and I suppose that it is true, if this were the world that we were made for, if we weren't only passing through..."
May you find peace in our Lord's saving promises and look to Him for comfort. While we may miss Amryn on this earth, we will see her again!
We continue to pray for you all.

Dear Nick and Lisa:
I don't really know you both,(other than going to Guido with Nick) but your situation touched our hearts. As fellow parents, we can feel a tiny part of your pain. We pray that Amryn's time on earth may serve it's purpose, comforted that nothing happens by chance, and hope that you are strengthened in the knowledge that you will be carried through this difficult time by our Heavenly Father. Praying for you all, Alexander and Saskia vanBarneveld (Jans)
We are truly sorry to hear about Amryn's conditions. Please know we have you and your family in our thoughts and prayers and may God give you peace as you have your last days/weeks with Amryn. Dear Nick and Lisa, and girls:
I turned to your blog today hoping to leave you with a message of comfort and found that instead you comforted me. Isn’t that the way it goes, the ones steeped in sorrow are reaching out to comfort the comforters. I remember well visiting you, Lisa, in the hospital when Rachel was sick, and I would cry and cry and you would hug me. I wish I could come over and give Amryn a snuggle and get a hug from you again. I am thankful to God for His work in your lives and Henri and I pray that He will continue to strengthen you and give you courage. Confessing God’s sovereignty is comforting, and yet at the same time it hurts. We know that Amryn’s life is a gift from God and at the same time, we know that her physical struggles are also by God’s design. This is hard … has God forgotten you, has he turned his back on you? I know that Henri and I have asked these things of God (and felt guilty about it) Yet, the psalmist in Ps. 42 and 43 says this same thing. “Why have you forgotten me? Why must I go about mourning, oppressed by the enemy? My bones suffer mortal agony as my foes taunt me, saying to me all day long “where is your God”. The psalmist doesn’t stay here though, he asks his questions of God in a specific context of faith: because after he asks these things of God he continues in his refrain “why are you downcast, o my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my saviour and my God.” (Ps 42: 11). When you go thru this struggle and wonder at God’s love then remember His deeds of old and His saving work in Christ. We are redeemed and this is the greatest comfort of all, we can know that the Lord created Amryn to be his child, for a purpose. He wants her in his church … We pray that you, and all of us, will find rest in God’s ways, for His will is good. We hope that the testing in the hospital ends soon, so that you can take her home and spend time with her in a less intrusive environment. We pray that the Lord will make this possible and that He will give you strength to care for Amryn, Robyn, and Lydia.
Love, Henri and Trish (and children)
Dear Nick and Lisa. As so many others have said, it is with utter sadness for you that we have read your news. Words seem so very inadequate. May God hold you and the girls so close that you can feel his complete peace and comfort. All our best as you spend these days with your beautiful Amryn.

Dearest Nick, Lisa, Robyn and Lydia,
Its times like this that we really feel the physical distance between us but we all know that through prayer and in our hearts you are with us and we are with you. Nick it was so good to talk to you today and to hear that your (and our) comfort is only in the Lord. May His care and love enfold you all now and in the days ahead. May the good shepherd gently lead you all through this difficult valley and carry Amryn in His loving arms. Psalm 23 Lots of love, Helen, Mick Hailey and Nathan
May God continue to enfold you in His ever-loving care and grant you and your girls all you need at this very difficult time.

Dear Mick and Lisa and family:
Words fail to describe the sorrow you must be experiencing. Just know that although we don't understand God's ways, He loves us and does what is best for us. He never makes mistakes. We wish you the strength and courage to make Amryn's days happy ones and make wonderful memories for your family. Your photos are already a wonderful testimony, keep taking them. We will lift your family's needs up to the throne of heaven in prayer.
