Getting ready to leave the hospital
Hello everyone, Nick here again.
Thank you. Thank God for all of you!
God has been good to us with the outpouring of love and compassion from His people. Through you we feel and experience God's love.
We praise Him for that.
It's humbling to realize that God is using us to touch so many people and to cause so many to turn their hearts and minds in prayer to Him. This begins to explain how God uses human tragedy as part of His plan since we humans so easily and quickly forget our God when all goes well. If He gave us Heaven on earth then I think most of us would fall away and lose our dependence on Him. So, as painful as these trials may be we thank God for them and can even begin to say together with James, "Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance."
We continue to prepare to leave the hospital and return home. Of course this doesn't happen as quickly as we would like but the hospital staff are doing their best to fulfil our wishes. Thankfully small miracles have been occuring since Amryn is doing much better today. She is tolerating the NG (nasal feeding tube which drops the food directly into her stomach) and is getting 60 ML of Lisa's breastmilk every 3-4 hours. Lisa is still able to also breastfeed Amryn whenever she needs to be settled. It is very rewarding for Lisa to be able to satisfy Amryn this way since she almost always falls asleep at her breast. Amryn needs the NG tube though because she only drinks for a few minutes before falling asleep. So this combination seems to be working very well for both mother and daughter.
The IV has been removed since it was starting to cause her hand to swell. It was no longer needed anyway. It's great to be able to remove these tubes and the other monitoring devices as well. Now all that Amryn has is the small NG tube which is about 2 feet long coming out of her nose. Apparently it doesn't bother her much (older kids say they don't notice it after a while). When we need to feed her we just hook it up to a food pump which slowly drips the breastmilk at 60 ML per hour directly into her stomach. We can also add medicines this way as well. Although Amryn doesn't need any medicine except for Sodium Bicarbonate (baking soda, really) which neutralizes the high lactic acid levels. This simple "medicine" works and helps lower her acid levels to normal. This is good news since the high levels of lactic acid were causing Amryn to "space out" and could potentially kill her if not controlled. She is now much more alert during her awake times with great big bright blue eyes that are irresistable to look at. They look like windows into heaven. (We'll have to post some photos later.)
Now all of this has markedly improved Amryn's condition and we can even notice that she's starting to put on weight and is looking healthier. We thank God for this and look forward to being able to spend some quality days, perhaps weeks and maybe even months with her. But all this is simply treating symptoms. The underlining disease continues it's relentless march as her cells continue to multiply and become increasingly defective. It's like a bad photocopy that you keep copying and re-copying -- eventually the end result is a blurry mess. The doctors have no clue about how quickly the disease will progress. Apparently it began already at conception and has progressed rapidly enough for us to see these symptoms at birth. Today they did ultrasounds of her internal organs, her heart, and her brain to determine what state they are in. We haven't received those results yet but they might come back as normal since the disease functions at the cellular level. Rachel did not have any obvious visible internal failures until the very end when her liver became enlarged.
But our desire is to return home as soon as possible so that we can enjoy Amryn in as normal an environment as possible. I had hoped to be home today but it looks like tomorrow (Tuesday) is more realistic. Lisa and I are being trained to provide the necessary care. Lisa's mom is offering to live with us and help Lisa during the day and to care for Lydia and Robyn as well. Our girls came and visited Amryn on Sunday which was a joy for us. Lydia dearly loves her "baby Amryn" or "my first baby sister" and wants to smother her with kisses and pats on the head. Robyn is a bit more quiet and notices that she "looks just like Rachel". We've explained to her that like Rachel she is dying and will soon go to heaevn to be with Rachel. Robyn thought this would happen all along since she has said before that, "perhaps God wants you to have two daughters on earth and two daughters in heaven". In her mind it seems to make sense that Rachel needs a sister too.
Robyn went to school today and she appears to be taking it quite well. She even went without her "Rachel dog" and "Killer Whale" stuffies that she ALWAYS takes to school -- "They're my friends!" (Henry and Trish, that killer whale is still the one you gave her when we went to Sea World in Florida. She's quite devoted in her friendships!)
We love our girls and want to thank Omi (Lisa's mom) and Rachel (Lisa's sister) for taking care of our two rascals. It's good that they have places where they feel loved and at home. But it's also good to be a family together once again soon.
Note:
The blog has been very helpful in assisting us in communicating with you all and receiving your thoughts and love. It is difficult and exhausting to talk to many people on the phone or to receive visitors. I suspect too that when we are home we would appreciate peace and quiet. The visits and phone calls should probably wait until later. Lisa reads all your comments and emails and appreciates them very much. Just let Lisa know that you're there for her if she needs you. Thank you and we love you all!
If any of you would like to send a personal email you can reach us at nicknlisa@gmail.com

Thank you so much Nick, for giving the detailed update on Amryn and family. I was really touched by what Robyn said about 'two sisters in heaven and two sisters on earth'. That is so sweet. You are continually in our thoughts and prayers. Hugs for you Lisa.

Hi Nick & Lisa
Thank you for posting your updates, it must be difficult. It is so hard for us to understand the doings of God but yet we trust in his Will and we have comfort in that. As my 5 year old just said, Mom its okay. She will be in Heaven, and Heaven is a wonderful place.
Lisa, we lost my baby brother when he was 9 mths old. I remember my mom having such difficulties dealing with and understanding why. Even though she was and still is surrounded by love, it is something she needed to "work" through. She knew in her heart, that this was God's Will and after some time of healing she was at peace with it. She still has troubles now and then with the memories but she is comforted knowing that he is in the "wonderful" place.
We pray for your family and ask God to comfort you and help you as you care for Amryn.

Nick and Lisa, please know that in those moments when you are unable to cry out to your Father, your brothers and sisters in Christ are lifting you to the throne of grace. We cannot even imagine, let along empathize with the range of emotions you are facing, but be comforted that God understands our pain, and He promises to carry us through.
Robyn's evident love for Rachel makes me weep...
On our knees for your entire family,
Len and Thelma
Wow what a post! Thank you once again Nick for taking the time out of your filled days to update your brothers and sisters in Christ. I was happy to hear that even in what seems to be darkness there were moments of sunshine . . .you get to see her beautiful eyes, Lisa is able to calm Amryn into a beautiful sleep, Amryn's sisters were able to visit and smother her with kisses, Amryn has put in weight. We thank God even for these little blessings. How we'd all long for so much more . . .but God has a perfect plan and a perfect will, and Amryn is definitly a huge part of that!
We wish you God's deepest peace as you take Amryn into the comfort of your home!
Lis - It is so awesome that you have your family here to be with you during this difficult time. I thank God for your mom and sisters who can be there for Robyn and Lydia and for you guys too!
May God bless your family in these days ahead as you take Amryn home!
We love you!
Esther, Jason & Mattea!
Thank you so much for the update on Amryn and all of you. I rejoice to hear of the small improvements for Amryn. It is an answer to prayer that you can experience more 'clear' moments with Amryn. Our prayer here is that you will soon get to take Amryn home and enjoy her as a family in the comfort of your own surroundings. May our God continue to supply you with all you need as the days go by. Hugs to you Lisa .....

STEP BY STEP
He does not lead me year by year,
Nor even day by day;
But step by step my path unfolds,
My Lord directs my way.
Tomorrow's plans I do not know;
I only know this minute.
But He will say, "This is the way,
But faith now walk ye in it."
And I am glad that it is so,
Today's enough to bear,
And when tomorrow comes, His grace
Shall far exceed its care.
What need to worry then or fret?
The God Who gave His Son
Holds all my moments in His hand
And gives them one by one.

Thanks so much taking some time out of your day to update us, Nick. We marvel at the strength the LORD has given to you to carry you through this time, to look above to His throne of grace and to share with us this moment in your lives. I don't know what more is left to say. I know these last moments with Amryn will be difficult - Lisa, we are praying for strength and peace. Its nice to read that you can bring Amryn home, feed her and just absorb the great blessing that she is, even if it is for such a short time. Please know that you are in our prayers.

Dear Nick and Lisa
We too are very sad to hear about your little daughter Amryn. At James' funeral today the organist played "Jesus loves me" - and He loves little Amryn too. May God continue to surround you with His love as you spend some time with Amryn on this earth.

REMEMBER GOD'S PROMISE
“I am always with you.”
This is the promise of God to one and all-
to every heart that’s hurting, grieving, or burdened with pain.
He offers hope and comfort.
He offers caring and companionship.
He offers peace of mind
God didn’t say the sun would always shine on each day.
He didn’t say the flowers would always bloom.
He didn’t say time would always bring us perfect happiness.
But God gave humanity a place to go -
a place where peace is always offered,
comfort is always given,
and love is a constant thing.
God said: "I am always with you,”
and He always is.
- Barbara J. Hall
May you always feel God by your side.

Dear Mick and Lisa and family:
Words fail to describe the sorrow you must be experiencing. Just know that although we don't understand God's ways, He loves us and does what is best for us. He never makes mistakes. We wish you the strength and courage to make Amryn's days happy ones and make wonderful memories for your family. Your photos are already a wonderful testimony, keep taking them. We will lift your family's needs up to the throne of heaven in prayer.

Dear Nick and Lisa,
Remembering you in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. We pray that God's love and peace may shine through the darkness, and that you may experience His nearness and blessing as you spend precious moments with your beautiful little daughter. May the words of Psalm 23 be a source of comfort and strength, a reminder that God is always near, by the quiet streams and through the dark shadows. He is the Good Shepherd, who loves and cares for His little lambs and His sheep. He will provide you with all you need. May His enduring promises encourage you!

Dear Nick, Lisa & girls,
Though you probably do not remember us, Nick (our connections go way back to Jan'73, just after you were born - when your family shifted from TAS to WA), and Lisa doesn't know us at all, yet we feel the bond that exists , even when we're so far apart!
We want you to know that you're in our thoughts and prayers in this difficult time. Treasure every moment you have with your little Amryn! And we know that you trust the LORD and His wisdom and ways!
