New cedar hedge

Since the forecast for Saturday was beautiful weather (and it was a gorgeous day!!!), Nick called up a guy in Matsqui who sells cedar hedging. He lets organizations such as churches plant and take care of the seedlings, and then they get a part of the profit when the trees sell. Neat fund raiser, hey?
Anyway, we ordered 60 trees, and then Nick talked to our neighbour who also wanted 30 trees. At first Nick thought he could dig a trench for them by hand, but our brother in law John was wise enough to offer to help with the use of a mini excavator! He graciously went out to pick one up from a rental place, and headed over, bright and early, to begin digging. He ended up being at our house the whole day! He had a rough, frustrating start to the day, with Fraser Hwy being shut down and the first rental place not having a machine... but he came through with his trailer and the willingness to help us out...thanks so much, John (and Shawn)!!!
It was a much bigger endeavor than Nick thought it would be. It was worth all the effort, though. Once the hedge fills in a bit, we will no longer have to look at the ice arena across the street, the yellow cement meridians in the corner of our front yard, and no longer have the neighbours across the street watch us eat dinner!
The first thing the guys had to do was take away the existing little hedge of low-and-slow growing shrubs. They have been moved to under the bedroom windows now.
Next, John dug a big trench along the front and another along the side of the house, up a bit of a hill, which will hide the view of neighbour's house from our future playroom/office (we hope to one day convert the garage).
The cedars arrived on a horse trailer and were unloaded...what a lot of trees! A forest in our yard! Robyn got right in there and helped, too. She is really keen on helping her Dad, and when she is given a job, she sticks to it 'till its done! Lydia, on the other hand, prefers to watch from the window... (: Robyn's job was to carefully sprinkle a cup or two of bonemeal on each rootball. She loved it!
At the end of the day, just as it was getting dark, the guys finished planting all of the trees! Later that night, the guy we bought them from called to say he had accidentally given us 4 too many, and was shocked to hear that they were all already in! That's my Nick! (;

Here are some shots of the progress and the "afters". Let's just hope they stay alive! At least there's no lack of rain here for them to get established... (;

Wow, great tree planting. Looks great and I'm sure will be even better for your privacy when they grow bigger!

I doesn't take long for those hedges to grow, let me tell you! We have been in our for 7 years, and the cedars were about as big as yours when we first moved in, and now they are well over 10 feet tall and offer a lot of privacy!
